Discuss Carolyn Ellis's chapter on autoethnographic interviews (called "Class Three")
Chapter three of The Ethnographic I was very insightful. I’m surprised at what a great amount of knowledge I could take away from a relatively short reading. The reason I learned so much is that I have never thought of interviewing in any way other than the traditional, question and answer dialogue method. The only interviews I ever knew of were the ones I would see through sports media and those were all very formulaic, making my idea of an interview so concrete. In this Chapter, Carolyn Ellis introduces the readers to three different interview styles: reflexive dyadic, interactive, and co-constructed narrative. Reflexive dyadic is very personal and flows like a regular conversation, while interactive interviewing is a longer, more drawn out process because of its collaborative nature. Lastly, the co-constructed narrative interview allows the interviewer to get a deeper and more genuine understanding of the interviewee.
For my autoethnography, I am thinking to do something along the lines of how circumstances play into the raising of children. It is a very broad topic at the moment, but I am working to find my specific niche. With that being said, I am more than likely going to use the co-constructed narrative style of interviewing to get a closer look into a parents journey of raising their child.
